2.4 GHz from Millicent to Potter's Point Mt Gambier

May 2007 saw experiments on 2.4GHz between David VK5HDW's QTH in Millicent and Dave VK5DG portable at Potter's Point on the side of the Valley Lake Mt Gambier. These two photos show the gear at David VK5DG's portable location. Well done fellows.

Intrepid explorer John VK5DJ recently travelled to Perth and places south.

This photo shows John displaying phenomenal courage by climbing the 50M Gloucester Tree in the forest near Pemberton. the tree was used as a fire spotting tower until aircraft took over the task. Now the tree is used to test the courage of tourists, like John.

The photo was taken by XYL Maxeen who used a powerful telephoto lens to capture his bravery at these dizzying heights.
Kindly ignore any cynics who say he was only a metre from the ground.

State Rally Championship

On Saturday 5th May 2007, the club provided the communications for the South East Round of the State Rally Championships. Approximately 21 members were involved in the 10 stages of the rally with a total of 36 checkpoints. The VK5RMG 2M and VK5ROH 70cm repeater systems were used for communications and the radios worked very well. It was excellent practice for emergency comms and the club members and their equipment came through with flying colours.

Some more photos will follow, but for starters here is proof that one of our members has trouble with traversing sand. To his credit he provided the photo - thanks Wayne VK5ZX

First step Wayne, straighten the front wheels. You've hardly bottomed the diff!

Summer Field Day

On Saturday 13 January 2007, the South East Radio Group travelled to the Bluff for the summer field day. There are far too many photos so it gets a special page. Follow this link Summer field Day 2007 to see what happened.

New VK1 UHF/SHF Records on 2.4GHz, 5.7GHz, 10GHz on 28th March 2007

Col VK5DK with some of his equipment

Col, VK5DK and Russell VK3 ZQB along with Neil VK2EI have established some new VK1 distance
records on 2.4GHz, 5.7GHz & 10GHz.

The contacts were made from Mt Canobolas near Orange in VK2 (33deg 20' 43.74" South & 148deg 58' 58.03" East
To Mt Ginnini in VK1 near Canberra (35deg 31' 47.40" South & 148deg 46' 25.00" East

By their calculations the distance is 249.3 Km

Russell VK3ZQB & Col VK5DK were on Mt Canobolas with Neil VK2EI on Mt Ginnini

The first contact was on 10.368100 GHz on the 27 March at 2234 UTC with 5/9 reports being exchanged both ways on SSB.

From left Col VK5DK and Russell VK3ZQB
After this contact was completed an attempt was made to establish contact on 24.04810GHz, but conditions had
deteriorated on 10GHz, so the possibility of a contact were poor, however in moving the 24GHz equipment, a malfunction
occurred and any chance of a contact between the portable stations was eliminated, the problem later traced to a faulty
relay and a blown up receive mixer on my 24GHz unit.

The group then set up their 5.760GHz unit and a 5/9 SSB contact was had, Col/Russell was running 15 watts to a 600mm prime focus dish using a can feed. Neil was only running 100mW to a 600mm dish, but signals were very strong even with the low power Neil was running.
Neil's report to Col/Russell was 5/8 & the report to Neil was 5/9

2.403100 GHz was then set up and a 5/9 SSB contact was made both ways, Col was running approx 5 watts to a 25 element Yagi antenna and Neil running 1.5 watts. As Russell does not have any 2.4GHz equipment he is not eligible to be included in the record contact.

In the wars - March 2007

It takes more than having his car written off to slow Bill VK5WCC down. Get well soon Bill, at least you can still smile and work the hand held radio.
Apart from recovering from concussion and cuts he would make a really good baker in that head dress.

Who's the naughty fella now?

What do you do when you've exceeded the cabin luggage limit?
Keep a straight face and bluff - we won't say what this new 25A power supply was classified as will we David?
Was it anything to do with 'an essential part of a heart/lung machine needed to keep five little old ladies alive!'
Truthful information at the next club meeting.

On Sunday 28th January 2007 the club assisted with the antenna raising at Club Secretary David VK5HDW's home.

"OK David, don't be afraid, I'll just give a little poke with this pole".

Sandy made sure the troops were well fed and watered. This photo shows clockwise from David (drinking from can), Tom VK5EE, Trevor VK5NC, John VK5DJ, Col VK5HCF, Bill VK5WCC, Col VK5DK, empty seat Chris VK5MC.
"Oh, the stress of watching David and Chris on the tower is too much for me, I think I'll take a break" says John.
